Volunteer Group Program Costs: Putting Your Donation to Work
The volunteer program has no fixed costs, but is rather funded by donations from our volunteers before they arrive. While these donations are not mandatory, they are highly encouraged. Below you will see how your donation will be put to work. The Student Service Group costs below approximates all the basic expenses for a one-week cultural immersion experience in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala. Working alongside staff from a well-established non-profit called Long way Home, Inc. volunteers will experience the cultural cornucopia of the 3,000 year-old Mayan civilization and the contemporary Guatemalan lifestyle.
Standard Costs: $300/person/week
Transportation: $25.00/person
Includes secure round-trip transportation from the newly expanded Aurora International Airport located 1.5 hours away in Guatemala City. Groups will be transported in a 15-person van driven by an experienced licensed driver.
Lodging: $15.00/day/person
Includes lodging at Hotel Comalapa Sol conveniently situated in a quiet mixed residential and commercial neighborhood. Hotel Comalapa Sol was built in 2007 to accommodate voluntourism demand. Located within the courtyard of a typical Guatemalan extended family compound, it affords visitors the daily opportunity to mix naturally with three generations of the local population.
Materials for volunteer projects: $50.00/person
The cost includes all expenses for building materials to be used while working with Long Way Home, Inc.
Entertainment: $20.00/person
The entertainment includes two musical events of traditional and contemporary Mayan music and a final farewell fiesta inviting local municipal dignitaries.
Food: $100/week/person
Comalapan cuisine is a mix of Latin American and Mayan traditions. The price includes three meals a day made from local ingredients purchased at the Comalapan open-air market.
Day Trips /Overnight Trips
In close proximity to Mayan ruins, dormant and active volcanoes and indigenous artisans, your group may want to combine compelling tourist activities while contributing skills, labor and expertise. Service groups will travel by private chauffeured transportation with a knowledgeable and reliable local guide. Several destinations could be included in a one to two-week stay.
Day-trips
Chichicastenango: $350/person
This city, known for its large indigenous market, can be reached within 2 1/2 hours from Comalapa. Rich in tradition and culture, "chichi" as the locals call it, is definitely worth a day trip. The price includes transportation.
Iximche/Tecpan : $500/person
A must-see in the area within easy reach is the majestic Mayan ruins. Iximche and Tecpan teach of an ancient civilization that created an empire of learning, art and language that continues to influence daily life in the area. This city is located within one hour of Comalapa. The price includes transportation, lunch and entrance fees. $500.00
Volcan Pacaya: $500/group
This 2,552-meter-high volcano, active since 1965, allows the visitor to observe all stages of volcanic activity including quiet ash, lava, steam emissions and full-throttle eruptions of hurtling rocks skyward. The price includes transportation, lunch and entrance fees.
Overnight Trips
Antigua: $800.00/group
This city is the ancient capitol of Guatemala and has many historical sites. It is a clean city with truly unique colonial architecture. Located within an hour's drive from Comalapa, this will give you a chance to visit a coffee farm, hike a volcano or do some shopping. The price includes transportation, three meals and lodging.
Lake Atitlan: $800.00/group
This 360-meter deep picturesque volcanic lake is known for being tucked between three volcanoes. It is a center of international travel and has many intriguing towns with distinct characters, such as San Marcos and Panajachel. These villages can be reached by lanchas , outboard motorized boats that carry up to 20 passengers and make short stops at rustic docks. The price includes transportation, three meals and lodging
* Service Groups should do further research on these tourist areas before their arrival. We recommend travel guides, such as Lonely Planet and Internet websites. Each service group will create individual itineraries depending on their travel plans.
