Parque Chimiya at San Juan Comalapa
The Community Kitchen

On the far side of the soccer field near the playground area lies the park’s community kitchen, constructed by Long Way Home in the Spring of 2006. We later bult small wooden tables in front of the kitchen, where people can sit and eat in the shade while watching the activities on the soccer field. The cost for the use of the community kitchen is about $4.50 per group, which generates a small amount of income to sustain the park.

The community kitchen provides a place for people to prepare and enjoy meals together at the park. It also serves as a forum to extend information to local Comalapans, including such topics and hand washing, nutrition, and food preparation. Community members also use the kitchen to hold meetings, have parties, or have a picnic for their business, church or family.

The community kitchen walso serve as a classroom for food preparation, nutrition, and a place to sell and cook the vegetables that come out of our gardens.   When the time comes and families are planning to spend the afternoon around Chimiya we can prepare food and generate some income for the community.
