Alternative Construction
The idea of construction using earthen materials and recycled garbage was borne
from both the desire to reduce the amount of trash burned and to embody the Mayan
tradition of respecting the earth and acting as stewards of the land. Burning
household trash is very common in rural Guatemala, and with the invention of plastics
and chlorine-impregnated packaging came adverse effects of the particulate matter
created when it is destroyed, often in close proximity of homes and children.
A healthy person may suffer various ailments from burning plastics including
burning eyes, headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and respiratory illnesses.
Alternative construction is the alternative!
