Major airlines fly regularly into Guatemala City’s newly remodeled Aurora International Airport.

From the Airport:

  • Option 1 Long Way Home can arrange private transportation directly from the airport to the volunteer site in San Juan Comalapa (1.5 hrs). The cost is dependent on current fuel costs in the country, but usually stays around US $50. Please let us know ahead of time, as Long Way Home has no vehicle and will have to consult with a taxi driver.

  • Option 2 Take a taxi (15 mins, 40Q) to the bus stop across the road from Tikal Futura, in front of Burger King and Blockbuster. Look for a Comalapa bus or a Chimaltenango bus. This bus will take you all the way to Chimaltenango (2 hrs,12Q). In Chimaltenango, get off of the bus as soon as it pulls off the highway (to avoid an unnecessary 30 min wait in the market), and look for the Comalapa bus sitting on the side of the highway (40 min, 7Q). Once in Comalapa grab a tuk tuk (5 min, 3Q), tell the driver Mateo and Chimiyá (chee-mee-YAH), and they will find the project.

From Lago de Atitlán: Take whatever bus is going towards Guatemala City and get off in Chimaltenango. The bus will drop you off on the two-lane highway in Chimaltenango. Cross the highway and look for a Comalapa bus sitting on the side of the highway (40 min, 7Q). Once in Comalapa, hail a taxi (5 min., 2Q) and tell the driver Mateo and Chimiyá (chee-mee-YAH) and you will make it.

From Antigua: Go behind the big market and look for a bus to Chimaltenango (30 min, 5Q, they leave every 15 min). In Chimaltenango, get off of the bus as soon as it crosses the highway (this stop is called the Cruce), and look for a Comalapa bus sitting along the side of the highway (40 min, 7Q). Once in Comalapa, hail a taxi (5 min., 2Q) and tell the driver Mateo and Chimiyá (chee-mee- YAH) and you will make it.
